Mt Tamahunga
Mt Tamahunga is 445m high peak, sacred to Ngati Manuhiri. Track leading to its top is suitable for people with good fitness level as it’s considerably steep. Walk starts at Omaha Valley Road. Beginning of the track passes private farmland, take care not to disturb stock. Track to the top goes through regenerating native forest and is signposted by orange markers. There’s lots of tree roots and muddy sections, so good hiking boots are necessary.
Don’t expect very good views at the top as it’s covered in bush, but there are some places where you can peek through and get a good glimpse of the coast. There were recently released kiwi birds in this area, currently successfully breeding. This track is part of Te Araroa.
Where is it located: From Warkworth drive to Matakana, carry on Leigh Road past Matakana Country Park. Turn to Omaha Valley Road before Big Omaha and follow signs, carpark is 1km down the road.
Approximate duration: 1.5 – 2 hours to the summit
Dog are prohibited.
