Matheson Bay

Matheson Bay, just at the beginning of Leigh, has it all: beautiful beach, playground, picnic tables and bushwalk. Sandy beach is popular spot for swimming and diving alike.

Cross small bridge over Kohuroa Stream and turn right to the gravel track in the grassy reserve. This will take you to Matheson Bay bush walk. Short track, mostly boardwalk, goes along Kohuroa Stream up to Leigh Rd. Look out for small cascades (waterfalls) along the way and swimming hole. Listen to the birds as track goes through beautiful native bush. At the end of the track you can either walk back the same way, or take foot path along the road back to Matheson Bay.

Where is it located: Leigh. From Warkworth drive to Matakana, then carry on to Whangateau and Leigh. Access either via Matheson Bay Rd or Grand View Rd.

Approximate duration: about 15 mins one way

Dog friendly, in summer (1st December to 1 March) dogs are prohibited from the beach between 10am and 5pm.
