Goat Island
Goat Island is a small island near Leigh. It’s also New Zealand’s first marine reserve established in 1975. Diving and snorkelling is the best way how to discover amazing underwater world. If you prefer to stay dry, you can try glass bottom boat trip. After exploring beach, visit Marine Discovery Centre, where you can learn all about local fauna and much more.
Opposite to Marine Discovery Centre is entrance to Goat Island Walkway. Easy gravel track goes along the cliff to the lookout with spectacular views of Little Barrier Island and Hen and Chicken Islands.
Where is it located: Leigh. From Warkworth drive to Matakana, then carry on to Whangateau and Leigh. In Leigh follow Pakiri Rd, then turn to Goat Island Rd.
Approximate duration: about 45 mins one way
