Horseshoe Bay
Horseshoe Bay is a beautiful bay between Sandspit and Brick Bay. Even though not suitable for swimming, fact that it’s accessible only by foot, certainly makes this spot special.
If you start your walk from Sandspit Campground, keep your eyes open for historical buildings from pioneer village, that once stood there. Walk through the campground and at the end carry on uphill. Soon you’ll go past old cart and giant chair, from which you can enjoy views over Sandspit Wharf and Mt Tamahunga. From the grassy reserve with giant bottle opener walk continues through the bush. Right at the very beginning watch out for giant (metal) weta. Bush walk takes you straight to Horseshoe Bay. Have a picnic, explore rocky shore or simply enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.
You can also walk from Puriri Place, look out for a signpost. Short grassy track leads to bush walk that goes to Horseshoe Bay. For longer option, start at Brick Bay, walk through bush to Puriri Place and from there to Horseshoe Bay.
At low tide, you can walk along the shore back to Sandspit or to Brick Bay.
