Cement Works

Beautiful spot by Mahurangi river both for history and nature lovers. Back in 19th century, Wilson’s Cement Works were the first commercial producers of cement in Southern Hemisphere. They employed about 180 people in 1903. In 1929, business was moved up north to Portland. Warkworth site was abandoned and within few decades turned into ruins. Those are currently fenced as structures are unstable and potentially dangerous. Recently set up Cement Works Warkworth Conservation Trust is trying to preserve ruins with goal to built footpaths and viewing platforms for safe public access.

Cement Works are busiest in the summer as lots of people are coming here for a swim in the quarry. It’s also another favourite spot for dog walking in Warkworth.
From carpark walk to the quarry and around the ruins. On the other side by the river, where is now Mahurangi Marina, you can find information panels that tells you more about local history. If you feel like stretching your legs a bit more, join the path that will take you for a walk along the river. Once you get to the steps that lead to the grassy path, you can either turn around here and walk back the same way or cross the road and carry on to the boat yard. Walk gets muddy after rain.

There’s toilets and picnic tables in the area.
