Kawau Island
Kawau is accessible via water only with ferry departing daily from Sandspit. In 1862, Sir George Grey, Governor of New Zealand, purchased Kawau Island and turned it into his private paradise. Admire historic Mansion House and take a stroll through surrounding subtropical gardens.
There’s good network of walks, follow track to the remains of Coppermine or take a dip in one of many coves. Walks are interconnected, so it’s easy to adjust to your needs.
Mansion House Cafe is open during summer months and on weekends in low season. Accommodation on island is available if you’d like to spend night or two. Kawau is busy during summer months as it’s favourite holiday destination, there’s about 80 residents that call Kawau their permanent home.
